Trayvon Martin
Trayvon Benjamin Martin was an unarmed 17 year-old teen killed on January 26th 2012 at Sanford, Florida.
Trayvon was with his father on a visit to his future stepmother at her townhouse.
On the evening of Jan. 26th, he was walking alone to the house from a convenience store. George Zimmerman, a member of the community watch saw the young man and immediatly reported him to the police because "he was suspicious". Several minutes after the call, there was an "altercation" between the two and Trayvon was shot in the chest.
Zimmerman was injured and said the kill was self-defence, and he was not charged. There was no evidence of neither of the facts ( self-defence or not ) so the police could not arrest him.
Following the death of Trayvon Martin, petitons, hashtags and protests were held and created. An online petition for an investigation collected over 2.2M signatures.
The Black Lives Matter organisation was also created after Trayvon's death.
Later, national media focused on the case and Zimmerman was charged of second degree murder and manslaughter during July 2013.
